I am doing a series called “Tasting Paia” where I will share with you all the hidden gems that not too many people are aware of. For example: did you know there is a hidden coffee shop that you can get to if you walk through the San Lorenzo bikini shop? Exactly.
My first stop in this series is “Cafe Des Amis,” where their extensive menu features Mediterranean and Indian Cuisine and lots of various crepes. I tried five of their best sellers because if you look at their menu it is really hard to pick just one thing! For my appetizers, I had the Vegetarian Mediterranean Platter, the Mixed Platter for Two, and ktheir Greek Salad. For my main course, I had their Catch of the Day Fish Curry, which was made with Mahi and served with mango and tomato chutney. For dessert, we had to get the crowd pleaser: Nutella crepes!
For drinks I tried the Lilikoi Margarita and Sangra. Both were made from fresh, local ingredients and very, very tasty! I really enjoyed the margarita. If you like lilikoi, you have to try theirs!
Everything was superb! Their hummus is made in house and I was practically licking the plate to get every drop. The vintage cheddar pairs excellent with their sweet onion chutney over their bread. Everything on the salad was fresh and from local farms. Their homemade dressing was so ono, I wanted to ask if they sold it in bottles.
My favorite dish was their Fish Curry. The accompanied chutneys added the right amount of sweetness and spice to this savory dish and don’t let the picture fool you, that dish was pretty big and had an excellent portion of fish.
Their nutella crepe was definetly a sight to see! Almost as big as the plate itself, this sweet crepe is something you have to get if you are a nutella lover. In fact, all their crepes looked so yummy- it was hard to choose just one. Check out their “Savory Crepes” on their menu, I am sure your mouth is drooling just by reading the descriptions.
All in all, Cafe Des Amis did NOT disappoint! If you are in Paia and want to try something different make sure to head their way. Their prices are very reasonable because you get a lot for your buck. One appetizer and one entree could be fine for 2 people to share. Mahalo to Chef George Foster for filling my stomach with fresh local ingredients and an array of different spices and flavors! Foster’s favorite dish? Their Seafood Special: Fresh Island fish, king prawns in a seafood tomato broth, served with saffron aioli, bread, and fingerling potatoes. My next time in there- I will be sure to order it!
Cafe Des Amis is opened every day from 830am-830pm. Happy hour is from 4-6 everyday. They have live music every Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday from 630pm-830pm.
What is your favorite dish from Cafe Des Amis??
