UPDATE: Pedestrian in fatal Hana Hwy. accident identified

On Wednesday May 6th 2015 at 4:10 PM, a motor vehicle collision occurred on Hana Highway in the area of milepost 2.1. The collision occurred when a black 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe multi purpose vehicle that was traveling east on Hana Highway within the right outer lane, veered right onto the east bound shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle veered right in order to avoid colliding into a vehicle in front of it that had slowed in traffic. Once on the shoulder, the multi purpose vehicle collided into a pedestrian who was walking east bound towards Paia.

As a result of the collision, the 46 year old pedestrian suffered critical life threatening injuries. He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room where he later died.

The multi purpose vehicle incurred only minor damages. The vehicle’s operator, a 21 year old Wailuku resident, did not suffer any injuries from the collision.

Vehicle #1’S DESCRIPTION:
Vehicle 1 is identified as a black 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe multi purpose vehicle.
The vehicle operator was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

PEDESTRIAN’S IDENTIFICATION UPDATE:
The pedestrian involved in this collision has been identified as 46 year old male, Michael MACHADO. MACHADO is a former resident of Molokai with no local address. Next of kin has been notified of his death.

The involvement of speed, alcohol, and drug impairment factors in this crash remain under investigation.

This is Maui County’s 3rd traffic fatality for 2015. There were 10 at the same time last year.
