Located at the Waiehu Golf course, “Fatt Chicks Burgers” is a locally owned brew and grill. Opened since August of 2014, this place has been growing a steady following in less than a year. When my editor told me to try it- I went with the expectation that it was your “regular” burger place. You know, serving up a slab of meat in between two buns and your typical lettuce and tomato toppings. (Nothing wrong with that, though.) Boy, I am so glad I was wrong!
They serve breakfast items like: fried rice, spam and eggs, and even a corn flaked crusted sweet bread french toast. For lunch, they sell various plate lunches. However, I was there for a burger; so I ordered what I was told was the best selling burger- the Original Korean Burger. (Click photos to enlarge)
The Original Korean Burger’s different toppings were made to compliment each other. The crispy fried onions added a nice texture, while the kal bi glaze and kim chee fused perfectly together. Chef Bonnie Davis really nailed it with that recipe! Having worked at some of Maui’s prestigious restaurants, I could tell just by looking at the menu that Davis knows her way in the kitchen and to my stomach! Next time I go I will try a different burger because they all sound appeasing. Might I add that their patties are all local meat, hand- made, and 6 ounces of deliciousness! While their seasoned fries were good, they were a tad too salty for my taste. Granted, I am one not to use much salt on my own food at home. (**Sidenote- Their seasoned fries are only available for in-dining.)
Upon glancing at the menu, I saw their dessert and knew I had to try it. If you are not that hungry and could do either the meal or dessert, get the dessert! Their tempura fried bread pudding is something you need to try. Everything was made in-house from the caramel to the bread pudding. The desert is a nice size portion that you can easily share it with another person. Although, after one bite- I am sure you wouldn’t want to.
Open Monday- Sunday from 8a.m- 5 p.m. They also have “Waiehu Nites” every 3rd Friday with live local music and pupu and drink specials! Having a party? They also cater or can host an event in their banquet room, see their website Fattchicksburgers.com for more details.
(Keep an eye out for my next stop on my “Tasting Paia” series!)
