At 8:12 p.m. Friday evening, the Hana fire crew and police officers were dispatched to a vessel reportedly taking on water about 20 yards off-shore from Koki beach, in Hana.
Firefighters arrived 10 minutes later and spotted the 50 foot vessel, MOKULELE, rocking back and forth in shallow water, about 20 yards from shore. Two Makawao men, ages 25 and 28, were on board at the time of the mishap. Both swam to shore and were checked out by paramedics. They sustained no injuries. The two men had spent the day fishing and were returning back to Maalaea harbor when they ran aground.
The vessel was reported to still have about 100 gallons of diesel on board. It’s uncertain if there was a breach in the hull, however, fire crews could smell a strong odor of diesel fuel in the air. The Coast Guard had been notified and is discussing environmental concerns and removal with the owner.
