Anonymous reports to MAUIWatch have confirmed that Hawaii MMA star BJ Penn (36) was arrested Saturday night at his hotel room after an altercation between him and his friend. Hawaii News Now later reported that Penn was staying at the Kea Lani Hotel in Wailea instead of the Four Seasons as originally reported. Sources say police responded and encountered an inebriated Penn. According to the anonymous source, Penn severely assaulted the individual at Kauhale’s Bar in Kihei and left him fleeing back to the hotel room where the arrest was later made.
Calls to Penn’s representatives remained unanswered. Maui County Police Department officials Monday stated that Penn was arrested and has already been released from custody.
Penn retired from mixed martial arts at age 35 last June after losing to Frankie Edgar via TKO at The Ultimate Fighter 19 finale. It was Penn’s third straight defeat. He finished his career with a 16-10-2 record.
